Overview

Tong Sai Bay (Thai: หาดท้องทราย, also spelled Tongsai Bay) on Koh Samui is a curved cove about 100 m long on the island’s east coast, between Choeng Mon and Chaweng. The whole bay belongs to one property, Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui (long known as The Tongsai Bay), which opened in July 1987 as Koh Samui’s first five-star resort. If you searched for “Tong Sai Bay Koh Samui” to book a room, this page covers the beach and the trade-offs first: what the cove is like, who can get onto the sand, and what the alternatives cost.

Large granite outcrops guard both ends of the cove, so the bay feels more like a private lagoon than a public stretch of coast. The sand is coarse and light yellow, roughly 40 m wide at the back of the cove, and the water deepens quickly a few metres from shore: good for a proper swim, less ideal for toddlers who need a long shallow wade.

Samui International Airport is about 5 km away (roughly 10 minutes by car) and Chaweng’s main strip is a similar 10-minute drive south.

History: Samui’s First Five-Star Resort

Tong Sai Bay’s modern identity is inseparable from the resort built inside it. The Tongsai Bay (rebranded Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui under Accor’s Garrya label) opened in July 1987, making it the first five-star luxury resort on Koh Samui, years before Chaweng and Bophut filled up with hotels.

The resort was designed and built around the bay’s existing granite boulders and trees rather than clearing them. That shaped the layout: suites, cottages and villas are scattered up the hillside rather than stacked in one tower, so many rooms look down through the canopy to the cove and the Gulf of Thailand beyond. Sources disagree on the exact room count (listings give about 80 to 83 units, for example 63 suites plus 18 private pool villas), so confirm it with the resort if it matters to your plans.

Long before any resort existed, Tong Sai was one of dozens of small coves along Samui’s east coast, used by local fishermen for shelter. The Thai name “ท้องทราย” (Thong Sai / Tong Sai) translates roughly to “sandy belly” or “sand basin”: a fitting description of a small, protected pocket of beach cupped between rocky headlands. The resort’s own account of its history and sustainability practices is on the Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui website.

The Beach: Size, Sand, and Swimming

Tong Sai Bay is often cited as one of the smallest named beaches on Koh Samui: around 100 m of shoreline, compared with Chaweng’s roughly 6 km or Maenam’s 5 km. The cove is bounded on both sides by large rock formations that curve out into the water, which keeps the bay calm even when wind picks up on the open coast nearby.

Sand and shape

The sand is coarse-grained and light yellow rather than the powder-fine white sand of Chaweng or Choeng Mon. It is raked and maintained by resort staff, so it stays clean and free of debris. The beach is about 40 m wide from the treeline to the waterline, with no significant narrowing at high tide the way some Samui beaches experience.

Is Tong Sai Bay good for swimming?

Yes for confident swimmers, no for small children without close supervision. The seabed drops off quickly: comfortable wading depth extends only 3-4 m from shore, after which the bottom falls away noticeably. There is no reef offshore, so the water is clear and deep close to the sand, but the quick drop is the reason families with toddlers usually pick Choeng Mon Beach instead.

No natural shade

Unlike beaches lined with tall coconut palms, Tong Sai Bay has little natural shade directly on the sand: most of the tree cover sits up on the hillside around the resort buildings. Sun loungers and umbrellas are provided for hotel guests; independent visitors should bring their own shade if planning to stay more than an hour.

Which way does it face?

East, like the rest of this coast: expect sunrise over the water and late-afternoon shade from the hillside rather than a sunset over the sea. For sunset beaches, see the west and north coast options in our east vs west coast guide.

Can You Visit Tong Sai Bay Without Staying at the Resort?

In principle yes, in practice rarely. Under Thai law the beach below the high-water mark is public, but the rock formations flanking the cove make it very difficult to reach on foot from a neighbouring beach, and the only realistic land route runs through the Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui grounds.

We could not find a published day-visitor or day-pass policy for the beach, and the resort’s restaurants list reservations on their own pages. Staff at the gate manage access, and beach equipment (loungers, kayaks, paddleboards) is for guests. Treat a visit as a question for the resort: contact it before you go, and do not plan a day around walking in unannounced. If an easily walkable public beach is the priority, Choeng Mon Beach, a short drive north, is the better fit; our Choeng Mon guide covers where to eat and stay there.

Activities and Water Sports

Tong Sai Bay is a resort beach built for relaxing in private, not a watersports hub. What exists is mostly arranged through the hotel.

  • Swimming: The main draw. Warm water (around 28-30°C year-round) and quick access to proper depth for laps or a float.
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding: The resort provides kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for guests to explore the cove and the calmer water just outside it.
  • Snorkeling: Limited close to shore because of the depth and lack of reef. Better options are the day-trip boats to Koh Tao or Ang Thong Marine Park; see our snorkeling guide.
  • Tennis and the fitness center: On-site facilities overlooking the bay, for hotel guests.
  • Spa treatments: A spa menu is available for guests; ask the resort whether day visitors can book.

For jet skiing, parasailing and banana boats, Chaweng Beach about 10 minutes south has the island’s largest concentration of operators.

Where to Eat

Because the beach sits inside a single resort, dining at Tong Sai Bay means dining at Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui. Current listings name these venues, but menus and outside-booking rules change, so confirm with the resort.

Venue Style Notes

Outside the resort, the nearest independent restaurants are in Choeng Mon village (about 10 minutes north) or along Chaweng’s main strip (about 10 minutes south), both far cheaper than anything inside a five-star property.

Nearby Attractions

Tong Sai Bay’s position on the headland between Choeng Mon and Chaweng puts several of Samui’s best-known sights within a short drive.

Under 10 minutes

  • Choeng Mon Beach: A longer, walkable crescent of sand just north, with beachfront restaurants and family-friendly shallow water.
  • Fisherman’s Village, Bophut: Historic teak shophouses and cafes; the Walking Street runs on Friday evenings. About 10 minutes by car.

Under 20 minutes

  • Chaweng Beach: Samui’s busiest beach and main nightlife strip, roughly 10 minutes south.
  • Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai): A 12 m golden Buddha on a causeway-linked islet, about 15 minutes northwest. Free, open from about 7:00 to 18:30.
  • Wat Plai Laem: A colourful lakeside temple complex with an 18-armed Guanyin statue, a few minutes past Big Buddha.

Where to Stay

There is exactly one hotel directly on Tong Sai Bay, but a wider range of accommodation is a short drive away in Choeng Mon and Chaweng. The ranges below are rough 2026 figures and vary by season; check current rates before deciding.

Category Rough price per night Examples
On the bay (luxury) 10,500-21,000+ THB (~300-600+ USD) Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui
Nearby villas (2 km) 5,250-14,000 THB (~150-400 USD) Private pool villas around the Choeng Mon headland
Choeng Mon (10 min) 1,750-8,750 THB (~50-250 USD) Beachfront guesthouses to mid-range resorts
Chaweng (10 min) 875-10,500 THB (~25-300 USD) The island’s widest budget-to-luxury spread

Is Garrya Tongsai Bay worth the price?

It depends on what you are paying for. The rate buys a private cove, hillside gardens and a resort with 40 years of history, not a long walkable beach or nightlife. If you want a lively beach to stroll and eat on, the same budget goes further in a Choeng Mon pool villa, and the cove is a 10-minute drive away for a one-off meal. If privacy and quiet are the point, the bay is hard to match on Samui.

Getting There

From Samui Airport (USM)

Tong Sai Bay is about 5 km from the airport (roughly 10 minutes by car).

  • Airport taxi: Fixed zone fares apply; Choeng Mon and Chaweng are in zone 1, about 500 THB (~14 USD). See our airport guide for the zone table.
  • Hotel transfer: The resort offers pre-arranged airport pickup for guests, usually the simplest option given the private entrance.

From other beaches

  • From Choeng Mon: ~10 min by taxi or scooter
  • From Chaweng: ~10 min by taxi
  • From Bophut / Fisherman’s Village: ~10-15 min by taxi
  • From Nathon (ferry port): ~30-35 min via the ring road

Local taxi fares are negotiated and vary: agree the price before you get in.

Getting around

Because the beach is enclosed within the resort, most visitors arrive by taxi, hotel transfer or private car. Renting a scooter (~200-300 THB/day, ~6-9 USD) is the cheapest way to combine a visit with stops in Choeng Mon and Chaweng on the same day; a car rental runs ~1,200-1,800 THB/day (~34-51 USD).

Best Time to Visit

Season Months Conditions Rating
Peak / Dry Dec-Feb Sunny, calm seas, coolest temperatures
Hot Mar-May Hot (35°C+), brief afternoon showers possible
Inter-monsoon Jun-Aug Mixed weather, generally pleasant
Monsoon Sep-mid-Nov Heaviest rain, choppier water on the east coast

Tong Sai Bay’s east-coast position means it can pick up more swell during the September-November monsoon than sheltered north-coast beaches like Maenam, though the rocky headlands still cut much of the wave action compared with open Chaweng. December to February brings the calmest water and highest resort rates; June to August offers a reasonable balance of warm, swimmable water and lower prices. General seasonal guidance for the island is also summarized by Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Practical Tips

  • Ask before you go: Since the beach sits inside a private resort, book a room or contact the resort in advance rather than expecting to walk in.
  • Bring shade: There is minimal natural tree cover directly on the sand; a hat and reef-safe sunscreen go a long way.
  • Swim with care: The quick drop-off close to shore suits confident swimmers; parents with young children may prefer the shallower entry at Choeng Mon or Maenam.
  • Cash and cards: Resort venues accept cards; if you plan to explore Choeng Mon or Chaweng village restaurants afterward, carry cash for street food.
  • Combine with a day out: Most non-guests treat the area as a stop while based in Choeng Mon or Chaweng, not a full-day base.

Who Is Tong Sai Bay Best For?

Traveler Type Fit Why
Couples Private cove, quiet atmosphere, beachfront dining
Luxury travelers One of Samui’s original five-star resorts, hillside villas
Families with young kids Water deepens quickly close to shore; Choeng Mon is safer for wading
Budget travelers No independent access or budget lodging directly on the beach
Digital nomads Beautiful but isolated; Chaweng and Bophut offer better cafes and WiFi nearby
Day-trippers based in Chaweng ~10 minutes away, but access is at the resort’s discretion

FAQ

Is Tong Sai Bay Beach open to the public?

Technically yes: Thai beaches are public up to the high-water mark, but Tong Sai Bay is enclosed by rock formations and reached almost entirely through the Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui resort. No public day-visitor policy is published, so contact the resort before planning a visit.

How big is Tong Sai Bay Beach?

Tong Sai Bay is one of the smallest named beaches on Koh Samui, at roughly 100 m long and about 40 m wide. That is a fraction of the size of nearby Chaweng Beach (~6 km) or Choeng Mon Beach (~1 km), which is part of what keeps it quiet and sheltered.

Is Tong Sai Bay good for swimming?

The water is calm and clear inside the cove, but it deepens quickly: comfortable wading extends only about 3-4 m from shore. It suits confident adult swimmers; families with young children may prefer the gentler entry at Choeng Mon Beach nearby.

How far is Tong Sai Bay from Chaweng and the airport?

Tong Sai Bay sits on the headland between Choeng Mon and Chaweng, about 10 minutes by car from both Chaweng Beach and Samui International Airport (roughly 5 km). A fixed-fare airport taxi to this zone is about 500 THB (~14 USD).

What resort is on Tong Sai Bay Beach?

Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui (formerly The Tongsai Bay) is the only property on the beach. It opened in July 1987 as Koh Samui’s first five-star resort and is known for building its suites, cottages and villas around the bay’s existing rocks and trees rather than clearing them.

What is the nicest beach on Koh Samui?

It depends on what you want: Chaweng for nightlife and watersports, Choeng Mon for calm shallow water and dining, Lamai for a relaxed mid-range base. Tong Sai Bay wins only on privacy. Our best beaches in Koh Samui ranking compares all 34 by swimming, crowds and price.
