Overview

Koh Samui Chaweng Beach is about 7 km of fine white sand on the island’s east coast, split into three sections (North Chaweng, Central Chaweng and Chaweng Noi) that swim and feel very differently. It’s the island’s longest, busiest, and most developed beach, with everything from beach clubs and jet skis to a shopping mall and the most concentrated nightlife in the Gulf of Thailand.

The sand is fine and white, roughly 40-50 meters wide in places, the water is warm (25-28 degrees C), and you can swim most of the year, with one big exception: the northeast monsoon (roughly October to November) brings rough surf and red flags to the main strip. The airport is about 15 minutes away. This page covers the beach itself; for where to stay, nightlife and getting around the area, use the Chaweng area guide.

Koh Samui Chaweng Beach: The Three Sections and a Quick Map

Reading the beach from north to south: the quiet north end near Soi Solo, then the public beach access by Chaweng Walking Street, the busy central strip (Ark Bar and most sunbed rows), a stretch of resorts, and finally the rocky headland that separates Chaweng Noi. The coordinates of the middle of the beach are about 9.527 N, 100.062 E. Behind the sand, Chaweng Beach Road runs parallel the whole way, so you can step off the beach at almost any point. From Chaweng Noi, the Lad Koh viewpoint looks back over the whole curve.

Section Character Swimming Best for
North Chaweng Wide, fewer sunbeds, resort belt Offshore reef shelters it, most reliable Families, quiet beach days
Central Chaweng Busiest kilometre on Samui Fine in calm months, rough in monsoon Beach clubs, water sports, nightlife
Chaweng Noi About 1 km, calm, upscale Sheltered and clear Couples, resort stays

North Chaweng

The quietest third. Wider beach, fewer sunbeds, more space between hotels. An offshore reef close to shore protects this section from high waves and strong currents, making it the most dependable swimming spot on Chaweng year-round, including during monsoon season. The far north end is where resorts like Anantara Lawana sit, with a narrower beach and fewer crowds than the centre.

Central Chaweng

The main strip: wall-to-wall sunbed rentals, beach bars playing music, water sports operators, food vendors, and a constant flow of people. Behind the beach, Chaweng Beach Road runs parallel with restaurants, shops, 7-Elevens, and the entrance to Soi Green Mango. Ark Bar occupies 150 meters of beachfront here and is the gravitational center of the beach’s day and evening scene.

Chaweng Noi

The southern extension, separated by a rocky headland. Chaweng Noi is shorter (about 1 km), calmer, and more upscale. The water is sheltered and exceptionally clear: possibly the best swimming conditions on Samui. Several luxury resorts (including Vana Belle) have their own beach sections here. The full profile is on the Chaweng Noi beach page.

Can You Swim at Chaweng Beach?

Yes, for most of the year: the water is warm and gently shelving, and the north and Noi sections stay swimmable even when the centre is choppy. The main strip is most exposed from about September to November, when the northeast monsoon pushes swell onto the east-facing coast, and red flags (where posted) mean stay out. Rip currents are more likely after storms.

  • Calmest months: roughly February to August on the east coast, per our sea conditions by month guide.
  • Roughest months: October and November; the beaches data for this page lists August to November as the rougher window.
  • Jellyfish: risk runs on a separate calendar (elevated roughly June to December island-wide); see the jellyfish guide and check posted signs.
  • Snorkeling: Chaweng itself is mediocre (boat traffic, sandy bottom). Go to Coral Cove or Silver Beach instead.

Chaweng Beach Weather and Best Time to Visit

The best weather for Chaweng Beach is roughly December to April, with calm seas, blue sky and peak prices; the worst is October and November. Climate averages put October near 300 mm of rain and November higher (about 445-490 mm across sources), the wettest months of the year, and the rainy season typically runs late October to mid-December. Air temperatures sit around 28-31 degrees C through the year.

Season Months Conditions Beach verdict
Dry Dec-Apr Best weather, calm seas, peak prices and crowds Best overall
Hot May-Aug Hotter, occasional showers, fewer tourists, east coast still calm Good value
Monsoon Sep-Nov Heavy rain possible, rough seas on the east coast, lowest prices Worst for swimming
  • The beach faces east: mornings have the best light for photos and swimming
  • December-February is the absolute peak: highest prices, biggest crowds
  • Party season peaks around Christmas/New Year and Full Moon Party weekends (spillover from Koh Phangan)
  • For month-by-month rain and sea figures, see the rainy season guide and best time to visit Koh Samui

Is Chaweng a Nice Beach?

Chaweng has the best sand on Samui and the most facilities, but it is also the most crowded and commercial beach on the island. Good: fine white sand, warm water, wide choice of sunbeds, food and sports within a few steps. Less good: jet-ski noise in the centre, vendors, evening music, and rough water in monsoon. If you want the prettiest quiet bay, look at Lamai, Choeng Mon or Maenam; for a direct comparison, see Chaweng vs Lamai.

Beach Clubs and Sunbeds on Chaweng Beach

Sunbeds cost about 100-200 THB per day and are often free if you order food or drinks from the attached restaurant (listings vary). Central Chaweng has the island’s biggest beach clubs. Ark Bar has a walk-in beachfront sunbed at a 300 THB minimum spend; its pool party is adults only (18+) from 21:00, and sources disagree on whether the club opens at 10:00 or 14:00, so check before you go. SEEN and Cabanas also sit on this stretch. Compare them in the beach clubs guide.

Water Sports on Chaweng Beach

Chaweng has the highest concentration of water sports operators on Samui, mostly in the central section. Most activities need no advance booking.

Activity Approximate Cost Notes
Jet skiing 1,500-2,000 THB/30 min Central beach; negotiate firmly
Parasailing 1,000-1,500 THB/flight Tandem available; 10-15 min airtime
Paddleboarding (SUP) 500-800 THB/hour Best in the morning when water is calmest
Kayaking 300-500 THB/hour Singles and doubles
Banana boat 500-700 THB/ride Group rides, popular with families
Boat wakeboarding About 2,000 THB/15 min Khalifa Samui in Chaweng; there is no cable park on Samui

Jet ski warning

Operators at Lamai and Chaweng have been reported to claim pre-existing damage and demand large compensation. Book through your hotel or a reputable tour operator, photograph the machine before you ride, and never leave your passport as a deposit. See the scams guide.

Nightlife, Shopping, Food and Hotels Beside the Beach

The beach is the daytime draw; the rest of Chaweng is covered in the area guide. A short map of what sits behind the sand:

  • Nightlife: the action centres on Soi Green Mango (Green Mango Club, Hush Bar, Bar Solo) and beach venues such as Ark Bar and Cha Cha Moon. Most venues have free entry and run until about 2-3 AM. Full rundown: Chaweng nightlife.
  • Shopping: Central Samui is the island’s largest mall (about 10:00-22:00; some listings say 11:00-20:00), and Haven Samui Community Mall is on Chaweng Beach Road. Evening stalls and night markets line the main road.
  • Food: budget Thai at night-market stalls (40-100 THB per dish), mid-range restaurants, and resort dining; fresh seafood clusters along the southern end of Chaweng Beach Road (300-800 THB per person). For a sit-down Thai dinner just off the beach road, Khaw Glong cooks to order (closed Wednesday). Our best restaurants guide covers the island’s top picks by area, including Chaweng.
  • Where to stay: Chaweng runs from 525 THB (~15 USD) dorm beds to 35,000 THB (~1,000 USD) a night suites. Examples by area: Lub d Samui Chaweng (budget), Chaweng Regent (mid-range), Centara Reserve Samui, Anantara Lawana and Vana Belle (Chaweng Noi) at the top. The Chaweng area guide compares North, Central and Noi as places to sleep.

Getting to Chaweng Beach

Chaweng is the closest major beach to Samui Airport, about 15 minutes by car. The airport taxi counter uses fixed zone fares (500-1,500 THB across the island); Grab cannot pick up inside the terminal. The walk-through on fares and vans is in the airport to Chaweng guide.

From Drive time
Airport About 15 min
Bophut About 15 min
Lamai About 15 min
Nathon 30-40 min

The public beach entrance is near Chaweng Walking Street, and beach access is possible between most hotels. Central Chaweng is walkable; songthaews run along the main road, and scooters (about 200-300 THB/day) help beyond the strip. Negotiate taxi fares in advance: no meters.

Practical Tips

  • Noise: central Chaweng is loud, especially Thursday-Sunday nights. Light sleepers should choose North Chaweng or Chaweng Noi.
  • ATMs: everywhere along Chaweng Beach Road; foreign cards carry a fee (about 220 THB per withdrawal).
  • Safety: generally safe, but watch valuables on the beach and don’t leave bags unattended.
  • Traffic: Chaweng Beach Road can be congested, especially 5-8 PM.
  • Scooters: accidents are the most common cause of tourist hospital visits on Samui. Wear a helmet, carry insurance and don’t drink and drive.
  • Families: North Chaweng and Chaweng Noi have calmer water and more space; the central strip is safe for daytime swimming but less family-oriented in the evening. See best beaches for kids.

FAQ

Is Chaweng the best beach on Koh Samui?

It has the best sand (fine, white) and the most facilities, but “best” depends on what you want. Chaweng is best for action, nightlife, and water sports. Bophut is best for character and dining. Lamai is best for value and laid-back vibes. Maenam is best for quiet.

How long is Chaweng Beach?

About 7 km including Chaweng Noi, making it the longest beach on Koh Samui (some sources give 6 km for the main strip alone). The main strip (North to Central) is about 5-6 km, with Chaweng Noi adding about 1 km south of the headland.

Can you swim at Chaweng Beach?

Yes, most of the year. North Chaweng and Chaweng Noi are the calmest sections; the central strip is fine in calm months (roughly February to August) but rough with red flags during the October-November monsoon. Check flags and avoid the water after storms because of rip currents.

Can you walk along Chaweng Beach?

Yes. The sand is continuous through North and Central Chaweng, and Chaweng Beach Road runs parallel, so you can leave the beach at most points. The rocky headland separates Chaweng Noi, which you reach by road rather than along the sand.

Is Chaweng Beach safe?

Generally safe. The main risks are scooter accidents (wear a helmet, get insurance), jet ski damage scams (book through your hotel), rough surf in monsoon, and petty theft on the beach (don’t leave valuables unattended). The nightlife area is busy but not dangerous: use normal urban precautions.

How far is Chaweng from the airport?

About 15 minutes by car. The airport taxi counter uses fixed zone fares (500-1,500 THB across the island), and Grab can’t pick up inside the terminal.
