Koh Samui is a hill with a beach around it. Climb any of its slopes and the island opens up: the Gulf, Koh Phangan on the horizon, the Five Islands in the south-west. We measured the skyline from 47 lookouts out to 8 km in every direction, then checked it against the sun for each month, so this page can tell you which ones catch the sunrise, which the sunset, and which keep the bar open after dark.

Pick a lookout and a month, watch where the sun goes

Every lookout has its own horizon: open sea one way, a hill the other. Choose one, then a month, and the sun lands where it really rises and sets from that spot, on the sea or behind a ridge, at the time it happens.

How we know where the sun goes
  • From each pin we sent a ray out every 3 degrees, 120 in all, sampling the ground every 40 m out to 8 km and correcting for the curve of the earth.
  • The highest angle each ray meets is the skyline you would see standing there, eye height 1.6 m.
  • Under 0.5 degrees the sun reaches the sea; up to 3 degrees it drops behind a near ridge a few minutes early; above that a hillside hides it. Times use the NOAA sun formula for the 15th of each month.
  • The model only knows bare ground. It cannot see trees, buildings, or the wall around a restaurant terrace, so a skyline here describes the island, not the site standing on it.

Month by month

Where the sun meets the sea, month by month

The sunset slides 47 degrees along the horizon through the year, from 247° in December to 294° in June, so the best spot changes with the month. Pick one: the lit pins see the sun reach the sea, and the short rays point to where it goes.

FAQ

Questions

Which viewpoint on Koh Samui is best for sunset?

It depends on the month: the sunset slides along the horizon by 47 degrees through the year. From 10 lookouts the sun sets into the sea all year, among them Khao Pom, Wat Teepangkorn, Jungle Route 360, Paradise Park Farm, Nathon Mountain Ridge Trail and Hillcrest Drive Viewpoint. Use the sun map to check your month.

Which viewpoint is best for sunrise?

Anything facing east or north-east. The Roof, Apirom, the Samui 360 trail, Lad Koh, Lamai Viewpoint and Khao Hua Jook all see the sun come out of the sea for most or all of the year.

Do you need a four-wheel drive for these viewpoints?

A few of the higher, steeper roads want a sturdy rental bike or a car with real ground clearance, and The Roof runs its own four-wheel-drive shuttle up. Most roadside lookouts are fine on an ordinary scooter.

Is there an entry fee?

Most are free roadside pull-offs or public land. Paid ones include Paradise Park Farm, Overlap Stone (a soft drink included), Lamai Viewpoint and the Ang Thong park fee; the tickets above quote each price. Hilltop restaurants are free to enter but expect you to order.

How accurate are the sunrise and sunset times?

The sun formula is good to about a minute; the skyline comes from a bare-ground elevation model, so it knows the hills but not the trees or a terrace wall. Treat a ridge time as a guide and arrive early.

Can you see Ang Thong from these viewpoints?

Yes, on a clear day. Our skylines find open sea toward the archipelago from 13 lookouts, the highest being Khao Pom, Wat Teepangkorn and Jungle Route 360. The two Ang Thong viewpoints themselves, Wua Talab and Emerald Lake, are a boat day from Nathon.
