Verdict: Four Seasons Koh Samui scores 8.3 out of 10
Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui scores 8.3 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 60-villa, 5-star resort on the island’s northwest tip, and it suits couples, honeymooners and families with children aged 2 to 12 who want private pools, sea views and service that guests name by first name. It is a poor match for swimmers who want a soft sandy beach, for anyone with limited mobility and for anyone counting baht: staff scores 9.8 and views 9.5, but the beach scores 6.5, access 5.5 and value 6.5. Villas started around 36,500 THB (~1,043 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026. The resort is also the main filming location of The White Lotus season 3, and that fame now shows in the reviews.
Method: 172 guest reviews read one by one (150 on Tripadvisor, 17 on Trip.com, 5 on HolidayCheck), about 31% of them from the last 18 months. Booking, Expedia and Kayak gave aggregate scores only, through search snippets. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.
What does the brochure say?
The resort opened in 2007 on a steep, terraced hillside above Laem Yai Bay, at the northwest tip of the island. The official site and HolidayCheck give 60 pool villas; Tripadvisor lists 74, so the file uses 60. Every villa has a private plunge pool, and the main 50 ft infinity pool sits above the bay. On paper there is also a private beach with free kayaks and paddleboards, the Secret Garden Spa with five treatment rooms, a 24-hour fitness centre, two tennis courts, a kids club and a teen club, yoga, Thai boxing and cooking classes. Koh Thai Kitchen is the main restaurant, and press coverage lists it as featured in the Michelin Guide.
Some claims are hotel claims only. The Green Key and Green Hotel Standard Gold certificates, the ban on single-use plastic bottles and straws, greywater landscaping and on-site composting come from the hotel side, and no guest in the file confirms them. Pets are allowed per a third-party listing (dogs and cats, maximum two, up to about 7 kg each), and parking is free on site.
What do guests actually report?
Platform scores are very high. Tripadvisor shows 4.8 out of 5 from 2,050 reviews and ranks the resort first of 8 in Ang Thong. Booking shows 9.8 out of 10 from 172 reviews, with staff at 10.0, and HolidayCheck shows 6.0 out of 6 from 31 reviews with every reviewer recommending it. Trip.com gives 9.5 out of 10 from 59 reviews. The one soft number on Tripadvisor is value, at 4.4 out of 5.
The 172-review sample gives the Samui69 score its shape:
| Category | Mentions (+ / -) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Staff and service | 140 / 10 | 9.8 |
| Rooms and design | 71 / 8 | 9.3 |
| Views | 65 / 4 | 9.5 |
| Restaurants | 58 / 18 | 8.0 |
| Beach | 39 / 14 | 6.5 |
| Value for money | 10 / 24 | 6.5 |
Service is the loudest signal: about 12 guests name an estate assistant, buggy driver or food and beverage manager by first name, and problems are reported as solved fast. The negatives gather around three things: price, the beach, and crowds from outside the resort. Only value has more negative than positive mentions. Overall the file shows a resort that guests rate close to flawless on service and views, and that loses points on location, beach, access and price, which is why the figure is 8.3 and not above 9.
Is it really the White Lotus hotel?
Yes, for most of it. CNN Travel and other production reporting name Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui as the main location of season 3: the sprawling pool, common areas, the restaurant and several villas were shot here. Three Anantara resorts supplied other scenes, including Anantara Bophut. For the whole trail across the island, see the White Lotus filming locations guide and the White Lotus hotels guide.
The fame has a cost in the reviews. Five or six guests in 2025 and 2026 complain that day passes and White Lotus visitors crowd the pool and restaurants; none of the pre-2025 reviews mention it. The Four Seasons Koh Samui day pass is about 5,000 THB (~143 USD) per guest reports, and the complaints start in May 2025. Villa guests rate their own pools and terraces as private, so the crowding sits in shared areas. The National covers the hotel beyond the show.
What are the villas like?
Rooms score 9.3 with 71 positive and 8 negative mentions. Villas measure about 102 to 118 sqm, with teak and rattan fittings, a terrace, a private pool and bathrooms guests compare in size to the bedroom, with two wardrobes. Bathrooms score 9.0 (11 positive, 1 negative) and beds 9.0 (14 positive, 3 negative, with one hard bed and one air-con hum). Views score 9.5: 65 positive mentions and 4 negative, where foliage blocked one guest’s outlook. Every villa faces the Gulf and Koh Phangan.
Cleanliness scores 9.7 (41 positive, 3 negative), with isolated damp-smell and mosquito mentions. Condition scores 8.5. The resort is nearly 20 years old, and no renovation year turned up in any source. Guests from 2021 and 2022 report a ceiling leak and a broken safe, while an August 2025 guest calls it not brand new but maintained perfectly. The fair reading: dated bones, well kept.
How good are the pools and the beach?
Pools score 8.8 with 53 positive and 14 negative mentions. Guests praise the private pool in every villa and say the main pool is never crowded, which fits with the day-pass complaints being about restaurants and the pool bar. The complaint is temperature: three guests say plunge pools are unheated and that heating is an extra charge.
The beach is the weak spot. It is private, uncrowded and comes with free kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear (39 positive mentions). But it is rocky and tide dependent, and 14 guests call the water murky or say it is not a place to swim. Only three villas sit on the oceanfront. For a soft sandy swim, look at the public stretch of the Laem Yai beach guide, or choose a hotel on Choeng Mon or Bophut. The file scores the beach 6.5.
Location scores 6.0: about 30 minutes from the airport, a steep site, and buggy transfers of 3 to 5 minutes inside the grounds. Nothing is walkable from the gate. Plan the ride with the how to get to Koh Samui guide.
What is the food, drink and spa like?
Breakfast scores 9.2 (38 positive, 4 negative): a wide buffet plus a la carte dishes, dietary needs handled, served until 11:00 per one guest. The complaints are peak delays and juice quality.
Restaurants score 8.0, with 58 positive and 18 mixed or negative mentions. Thai food is the strength, and the beach barbecue is praised. Western dishes are called average. All dining is outdoors, guests mention mosquitoes, and prices are high. Recent guests name pop-ups and events the older reviews lack: a Lebanese pop-up, a Thai buffet show, a fisherman festival and a rum tasting at the sunset bar CoCoRum. Searches for the Four Seasons Koh Samui restaurant menu and prices find no published price list, so ask the hotel. The bar scores 8.3: cocktails are praised, wine and minibar prices are not.
The Secret Garden Spa scores 8.8, with 46 positive and 4 negative mentions; 43 reviews praise the therapists, one calls a treatment underwhelming and one reports an overbooked spa. Wellness scores 8.8: free kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling, yoga, a Thai cooking class and Muay Thai, although some classes cost extra or fill up. The gym scores 8.3 (24 hours, with two tennis courts).
Kids score 9.0: a kids club for ages 2 to 12 and a teen club, loved by most families, with mosquito bites on children the main gripe. Couples score 9.3, helped by private villas and beach dinners.
Where does Four Seasons Koh Samui fall short?
Value. This is the weakest score in the file, 6.5, with 10 positive and 24 negative mentions. Entry villas run around 36,500 THB (~1,043 USD) in the low season and about 60,000 THB (~1,714 USD) at peak. Guests cite paid pool heating, food and drink prices and the day pass as places where the bill grows. One 2026 guest who paid about 3,500 USD a night rated the stay 3 of 5 and called it worse than rivals at 1,200 USD.
Beach. Rocky, tidal and murky at times. It is private and quiet, not a swim-first beach.
Access and site. Access scores 5.5. The terraced hillside means stairs to the beach and steep climbs; buggies are on call, with occasional waits. Reduced mobility is a poor match.
Mosquitoes and outdoor dining. About 10 guests report mosquitoes, including one family with about 15 bites per person per day.
Crowds from outside. Day-pass and White Lotus visitors in shared areas, reported by five or six guests since 2025.
Who should book, and who should not?
Book it if you are:
- a couple or honeymooner who wants a private pool, sea views and dinner on the sand
- a family with children aged 2 to 12 who will use the kids club and free water sports
- a guest who values named, attentive staff above a walkable location
- a White Lotus fan with a five-figure baht nightly budget
Skip it if you are:
- a swimmer who wants a soft sandy beach with clear water
- travelling with limited mobility, since the site is steep
- on a tight budget, since extras and food add up quickly
- after nightlife, restaurants on foot or an easy trip into town
Pros and cons
Pros
- Staff praised by name in about 140 positive mentions against 10 negative, with problems solved fast
- Private pool villas with Gulf views and real privacy
- Spa, kids club, free water sports and Thai dining all confirmed by guests
Cons
- Value: Tripadvisor value 4.4, with 24 negative value mentions and paid pool heating
- Private beach is rocky, tidal and murky at times
- Mosquitoes, outdoor-only dining, and day-pass crowds at shared areas
What are the alternatives?
- Conrad Koh Samui: scores 8.0 in the file with the same formula of hillside pool villas and sunset views, from about 9,500 THB (~271 USD). Also steep and isolated, with a small coarse beach.
- Anantara Bophut: scores 7.8, walkable to Fisherman’s Village and on its own beach, from about 7,400 THB (~211 USD). Louder with families and no private pool as standard.
