Verdict: Anantara Bophut Koh Samui scores 7.8 out of 10

Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort scores 7.8 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 106-room, 5-star resort on Bophut Beach, about 15 minutes from the airport and within walking distance of Fisherman’s Village. It suits families with children, wellness and activity travellers, and guests who want a walkable Bophut base with staff who fix problems. It is a poor match for anyone wanting adults-only calm, guests counting baht, and travellers who need lifts: quiet scores 6.5, value 6.6 and access 6.0. Rooms started around 7,400 THB (~211 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.

Method: 182 guest reviews read one by one, the bulk of them on Tripadvisor and 72% from the last 18 months. HolidayCheck was read for themes only, and the Booking.com, Google and Agoda scores come from search snippets, so they count as aggregate scores. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.

What does the brochure say?

The resort opened in 2004 on Bophut Bay and holds 106 rooms and suites in low-rise buildings set in tropical gardens designed by Bill Bensley, with lotus ponds and tree huts. The rooms were refurbished in January 2025 by Abacus Design, at a reported cost of about 2 million USD. Facilities on paper: a 30 m beachfront infinity pool and a smaller outdoor pool, private pool suites, three restaurants (Guilty, Thin Thai and TAN Beach Lounge), Anantara Spa with six treatment pavilions, a Technogym fitness centre launched in 2025, and the Baan Ling Noi kids club, joined by a Kids and Teens Club in the first quarter of 2025. The hotel lists free yoga, mat pilates, meditation, Muay Thai, cooking classes and non-motorised watersports.

Pets are not allowed. Parking is free on site. Green Globe certification is reported by eTurboNews; the no single-use plastic, glass amenity bottles and grey water reuse are hotel claims that almost no guest mentions. The official site is the Anantara Bophut page.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.6 out of 5 from 3,810 reviews, rank 22 of 207 Koh Samui hotels, with service at 4.7, location 4.7, cleanliness 4.6, sleep 4.6, rooms 4.5 and value 4.2. HolidayCheck shows 5.8 out of 6 from 303 reviews, with 95% recommending the hotel. Snippets show Booking.com at 9.2 out of 10 (419 reviews), Google at 4.6 out of 5 (about 3,800) and Agoda at 8.7 out of 10 (391).

The 182-review sample explains why the Samui69 score is lower than those headline numbers:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 100 / 12 9.6
Location 40 / 4 9.0
Cleanliness 32 / 6 8.8
Grounds 34 / 5 8.8
Rooms 40 / 12 8.0
Pool 22 / 22 7.0
Quiet and privacy 14 / 26 6.5
Value for money 14 / 20 6.6

Staff praise is the loudest signal in the file. Guests name individual staff in a large share of reviews, describe service that anticipates requests, and report problems fixed fast. Complaints about slow restaurant service or check-out are a small minority, and one guest mentions no help with luggage. The weak spots sit elsewhere: the file shows a resort that looks after guests well and handles crowds, noise and pricing less well, which is why the overall figure lands at 7.8 and not above 9.

What are the rooms like?

Rooms score 8.0, with 40 positive and 12 negative mentions. Guests praise the spacious junior garden suites and the January 2025 refurbishment: about 8 guests in 2025 mention it favourably. Entry rooms are smaller, and one 2024 guest calls the bathroom cramped. Three older-stay guests call the rooms outdated, which fits the timing: their stays predate the refit. Sea views come mostly from beach suites and upper floors, while most rooms face the gardens, so views score 6.5.

Beds score 8.3 with 14 positive and 5 negative mentions: several guests call the beds cloud-soft. The complaints are loud air conditioning, ventilation hum, thin adjoining walls and baby noise from neighbours. Bathrooms score 7.0 and split evenly: rain showers and a Dyson hairdryer earn praise, while a few guests dislike small layouts and the swing glass shower door.

A garden suite with timber finishes

Cleanliness scores 8.8 (32 positive, 6 negative): immaculate rooms and grounds with twice-daily housekeeping. The negatives are mosquitoes, mentioned by 5 guests despite spraying, pigeons, and one 2025 report of a dirty pool. Condition scores 8.3. The rooms are new but the public areas are 20 years old, and one guest in September 2026 complains about old facilities. There are no elevators, so upper-floor rooms mean stairs; access scores 6.0, and guests advise asking for a low floor.

How good are the pool and the beach?

The pool scores 7.0 with 22 positive and 22 negative mentions, the most even split in the file. The 30 m beachfront infinity pool is the draw. The complaints are noise and crowding: at least 8 guests raise loud children in the afternoon, 6 report towels used to reserve loungers, and some say loungers are gone by 9 am. Three guests in 2024 and 2025 mention pool film, debris or foam. Two guests recommend a private pool room to escape the afternoon crowd.

The infinity pool facing Bophut Bay

The beach scores 7.0 (14 positive, 9 negative). The resort has its own beachfront with cabanas, and cabana staff are praised. Free non-motorised watersports are on offer. The complaints are coarse, sharp sand, with some guests advising jelly shoes, and a narrow bay that feels rough compared with the eastern beaches. HolidayCheck reviewers raise the same points: coarse sand and lounger spacing. For the wider bay, see the Bophut Beach guide.

Location scores 9.0 (40 positive, 4 negative). Guests like the short walk to restaurants and the Friday market at Fisherman’s Village, about 850 m away, and read the Bophut Fisherman’s Village guide for the evening side of the trip. The drawback is the road behind the hotel: guests report heavy traffic and say crossing needs care.

A garden sala tucked among tropical plants

Grounds score 8.8 (34 positive, 5 negative): a lush oasis with tree huts and water lilies, and the main reason HolidayCheck reviewers mention jungle-like gardens.

What are the food, drink and spa like?

Breakfast scores 8.6 (26 positive, 9 negative). The buffet has themed extras and is included in most rates; guests call it wide, with excellent variety. The negatives: some find it repetitive for a 5-star, items are not replenished late in service, and indoor seating is limited.

Restaurants score 7.5 (16 positive, 13 negative). The venues are Guilty, Thin Thai and TAN Beach Lounge. Guilty food is called delicious, while other guests find the Thai buffet bland and the food below hotel level. Guests also report prices that are not competitive against Fisherman’s Village, where a walk finds more choice. The bar scores 7.8: happy hour and the bartenders are praised, the swim-up bar is underused, and the music from Guilty disturbs some guests.

A petal bath in a spa pavilion

The spa scores 8.7 (22 positive, 6 negative). The Anantara Spa has six treatment pavilions; guests praise therapists with “magic hands” and long packages of up to 4 hours. The negatives are steep prices and a restroom outside the treatment room. The gym scores 8.0 after the 2025 Technogym launch, praised by recent guests. Wellness scores 9.0, the best of the activity categories: free classes, Muay Thai, cooking classes that families enjoy, and free watersports.

Is Anantara Bophut a White Lotus location?

Yes, in part. The resort was one of the Anantara Thailand properties named as official filming locations for HBO’s The White Lotus Season 3, filmed in 2025. Scenes listed on the property include the lobby, the entrance driveway, the staff parking area, the jewellery store and several spa scenes. It is not the show’s main hotel set, and no guest review in the file mentions the connection. The White Lotus locations guide covers every set on the island.

Where does Anantara Bophut fall short?

Noise. Quiet scores 6.5 with 14 positive and 26 negative mentions. The causes are many young children and afternoon pool noise, wedding events on site, traffic behind the hotel, and air conditioning and ventilation hum. A few complaints come from older stays, so not every noise report reflects the current building.

Couples. Couples score 7.2 (14 positive, 14 negative). Honeymooners report feeling spoiled, but there is no adults-only pool, and guests advise booking a private pool room to escape the afternoon family crowd.

Value. Rooms ran from about 7,400 to 10,500 THB (~211-300 USD) in the sources checked. Value is the lowest Tripadvisor subscore at 4.2, against 4.7 for service. The file scores it 6.6 with 14 positive and 20 negative comments: one guest at about 900 USD a night felt it was not justified, and spa and restaurant prices draw the most complaints. A minority call it fair pricing for a 5-star.

Lounger wars and loyalty. Towel reserving is raised by 6 guests. Anantara Vacation Club members mention unequal treatment in 3 reviews.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a family with young children who will use the kids club, pool and free classes
  • a traveller who wants a walkable Bophut base, with Fisherman’s Village and the Friday market nearby
  • a wellness or activity seeker, given free yoga, Muay Thai, cooking classes and watersports
  • a honeymooner willing to pay for a private pool room

Skip it if you are:

  • after adults-only calm or a quiet pool, since children dominate afternoons
  • a light sleeper, since AC hum, thin walls and traffic appear in the reports
  • on a tight budget, since the file shows pricey extras
  • travelling with a pet, or needing lifts and step-free access

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Staff service is the standout: 100 positive mentions against 12 negative, with problems fixed fast
  • Walk to Fisherman’s Village, plus own beachfront and Bensley gardens
  • Strong family and wellness offer: kids club, free classes, Muay Thai and cooking

Cons

  • Noisy with families: loud afternoon pool, no adults-only pool, loungers go early
  • Value is the weakest score; dining and spa are priced high and some food is mixed
  • Coarse beach sand, stairs only (no elevators) and road traffic behind the hotel

What are the alternatives?

  • Melia Koh Samui: a 200-room family resort in Choeng Mon scoring 7.3, with a lagoon pool, lazy river and slides, rooms from about 6,000 THB (~171 USD). Cheaper, but guests report more noise and pool works in 2026.
  • Banyan Tree Samui: 88 private pool villas on a hillside bay, also scoring 7.8, with quiet at 8.2 against 6.5 here. Entry rates start near 18,600 THB (~531 USD), and the hillside needs buggies.
