How a bout runs

A professional card follows the same shape all night: short rounds, short rests, and a clear shift in pace as the fight goes on. Tap a round.

A bout as a clock: 5 rounds of 3 minutes with 4 rests of 2 minutes, 23 minutes of ring time R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 23 min in the ring
5 rounds of 3 min 4 rests of 2 min
Part of the bout

Before the bell

Wai kru

Each fighter performs the wai kru ram muay, a ritual dance to live sarama music that pays respect to their teacher and camp. It happens before every bout, not just title fights.

Minutes 0 to 3

Round 1

A feeling-out round. Fighters test range and rarely commit, so judges tend to score it lightly.

Minutes 5 to 8

Round 2

The pace picks up as both corners start pressing, looking for the opening the first round didn't give them.

Minutes 10 to 13

Round 3

Usually where the clinch takes over, with knees at close range doing most of the scoring.

Minutes 15 to 18

Round 4

Keeps that pace up, often the most physical stretch of the fight before the final push.

Minutes 20 to 23

Round 5

Usually the sharpest, as fighters chase a clear decision, unless one is already well ahead.

Closed venue

Chaweng Boxing Stadium is closed

It still turns up in older guides and listings. The stadium running cards in Chaweng today is Samui International Muay Thai Stadium, a different venue entirely.

FAQ

Questions

Is Chaweng Boxing Stadium still open?

No. It's permanently closed, though many guides and listings still show it. The Chaweng stadium actually running cards is Samui International Muay Thai Stadium.

Where can I watch Muay Thai on Koh Samui, and which nights?

At Samui International Muay Thai Stadium in Chaweng, which runs cards on fixed nights each week with the first bell in the evening. Check the week grid on this page for the nights.

What is the wai kru ram muay?

It's the ritual dance each fighter performs before a bout, set to live sarama music, paying respect to their teacher and training camp. It happens before every fight, not just title bouts.

Can I train at a gym before or instead of watching a fight?

Yes. Several gyms near Chaweng and Lamai take walk-in visitors for a single drop-in class, no booking or experience required.

Are there Muay Thai fights for tourists on Koh Samui?

Yes. Visitors are welcome at the Samui International Muay Thai Stadium cards in Chaweng. Ringside seats cost more than the back rows, and the gap changes with the card, so check current prices at the stadium.
